The four test groups

Four branches, one laboratory.

Pathology covers everything from a cholesterol check to a cancer diagnosis. The field divides into four main branches, each with its own scientists and its own questions.

Biochemistry

The chemistry of your blood and body fluids. Liver and kidney function, cholesterol, hormones, blood glucose and electrolytes all live here.

Haematology

Australia's pathology system is one of the most regulated in the world. Here is what protects your results, and how much of it costs you.

Quality

Accreditation everywhere

Australian laboratories are accredited against national standards, participate in external quality programs, and answer to the RCPA. Your sample is tracked from collection to result.

Cost

Mostly bulk billed

Most routine pathology ordered by a doctor is bulk billed, so there is nothing to pay. A few specialised or wellness tests carry a gap. Ask the collection centre if unsure.

Records

Results, safely stored

Laboratories keep results for years, so your history is available for comparison. Many results also flow into My Health Record if you have opted in.

What patients ask about the laboratory.

Why does my doctor order blood tests when I feel fine?

Pathology catches problems before symptoms appear: rising cholesterol, early diabetes, declining kidney function, iron deficiency. Prevention and monitoring are two of its most powerful uses.

What does it mean if my result is outside the reference range?

Reference ranges describe where most healthy people sit, so a small number of healthy people naturally fall outside. One slightly abnormal result is usually a flag to interpret, not a diagnosis. Your doctor weighs it against your symptoms, history and other results.

Do I need to fast before blood tests?

Some tests, like fasting glucose and certain lipid profiles, need an overnight fast. Many do not. Your doctor or the collection centre will tell you exactly what is needed for your specific tests.

How long until my results come back?

Routine blood tests often land within a day. Cultures can take days because bacteria need time to grow. Tissue samples can take several days to a week or more, because they involve processing, sectioning and expert review.

Who can see my pathology results?

Your results are confidential health information, shared with the clinicians involved in your care. If you use My Health Record, results may appear there too. Australian privacy law governs how they can be used.

Will pathology cost me anything?

Most pathology requested by a doctor is bulk billed, meaning no out-of-pocket cost. A few specialised or screening tests have a gap. The collection centre can confirm before your test.

What is the difference between a blood test and a biopsy?

A blood test measures what circulates in your bloodstream. A biopsy removes a small piece of tissue so a histopathologist can study its structure under the microscope. Biopsies confirm most cancer diagnoses.
