Vaccines, explained.

Vaccination is one of the safest and most effective health measures ever invented. This guide explains how vaccines train your immune system, what the National Immunisation Program covers for free, how schedules are designed for each life stage, and how to find your own immunisation record.

Why this guide exists

A vaccine does not just protect you. It protects everyone around you.

Tricorian Life
02 The Basics
How immunity works

Training your immune system.

A vaccine is a rehearsal. It shows your immune system a harmless piece of a germ so that when the real germ arrives, your defences already know the playbook.

Antibodies and memory

Vaccines prompt your body to make antibodiesAntibodyA protein your immune system makes that recognises and neutralises a specific germ. Vaccines teach your body to make them before you ever meet the real infection. and, more importantly, memory cells that remember the germ for years, often decades.

Why schedules are spaced

Some vaccines need several doses, spaced weeks or months apart, to build strong, lasting protection. Booster doses later refresh immunity as it naturally fades.

Herd immunity, simply

When enough people are immune, a germ cannot easily spread, so it protects people who cannot be vaccinated: newborns, some cancer patients, and people with weakened immune systems.

Side effects are a sign, not a failure

Mild reactions like a sore arm, mild fever or tiredness show the immune system responding. Serious reactions are rare, and every vaccine is monitored nationally through AusVaxSafetyAusVaxSafetyAustralia's national system for actively monitoring vaccine safety, checking in with people after vaccination to catch rare problems early..

Safety testing is rigorous

Before a vaccine is approved in Australia, it passes through laboratory studies, clinical trials and the TGA's review, then ongoing monitoring after approval. The Australian Immunisation Handbook sets the national standards.

Different vaccines, different designs

Some vaccines use inactivated germs, some use harmless pieces of a germ, and newer designs deliver genetic instructions. All of them teach the same lesson: recognise this germ early.

03 Your Journey
A lifetime of protection

Vaccination is for every age.

Immunisation is not only a childhood event. The schedule follows you through life, adding protection exactly when each life stage needs it.

01

Babies

The first doses start soon after birth, protecting against hepatitis B, then whooping cough, pneumococcal disease, rotavirus and more in the first year.

02

Children

The 4-year-old check adds a booster, and the school program covers HPV for teenagers, which protects against cervical and other cancers.

03

Adults

Adults need boosters too: tetanus and whooping cough every 10 years, plus travel vaccines and catch-up doses for anything missed.

04

Pregnancy

Whooping cough and influenza vaccines during pregnancy pass protection to the baby before birth, when newborns are most vulnerable.

05

Older age

Shingles, pneumococcal and annual influenza vaccines become more important, because immune defences naturally weaken with age.

04 Who You Will Meet
Where vaccines are given

Immunisation is everywhere.

Vaccination happens in more places than most people realise, always by trained professionals.

Your GP and practice nurse

The most common place. Practice nurses give most vaccinations and report every dose to the register while you wait.

Community pharmacies

Pharmacists administer a growing list of vaccines, including influenza, COVID-19 and travel vaccines, often with no appointment.

Council and school clinics

Local councils run community immunisation sessions, and school-based programs deliver the adolescent HPV and booster schedule.

Workplace and travel clinics

Many workplaces offer annual flu vaccination, and travel clinics cover the vaccines recommended for specific destinations.

05 Beyond the Basics
Programs, records and payments

The system behind the needle.

Australia runs one of the world's strongest immunisation programs. These are the three pillars patients should know.

Funding

The National Immunisation Program

The NIPNational Immunisation ProgramThe Australian Government program that provides essential vaccines free to eligible people, from newborns to older Australians. provides free essential vaccines to eligible people with a Medicare card, from birth through older age, against diseases like whooping cough, measles, HPV, shingles and influenza.

Records

The Australian Immunisation Register

The AIRAustralian Immunisation RegisterThe national register where every vaccination given in Australia is recorded. Your immunisation history statement is drawn from it. records every vaccine given in Australia, building your lifelong immunisation history statement. You can view it through Medicare online or your myGov account.

Coverage

No Jab No Pay, No Jab No Play

Family payments and childcare enrolment are linked to being up to date with childhood vaccinations, one reason Australia's childhood coverage is among the highest in the world.

06 The Directory
Every vaccine registered for use in Australia

The complete vaccine directory.

These are the vaccines registered for use in Australia, listed in the Australian Immunisation Handbook. For each one: the supplier, the active formula, the diseases it protects against, when it is given, how it is given, and who gives it. NIP funding and eligibility depend on your age, risk factors and where you live, so confirm your personal schedule with your GP, pharmacist or immunisation provider.

This directory lists vaccines registered for use in Australia, drawn from the Australian Immunisation Handbook vaccine index. NIP funding, eligibility and the exact schedule point for you depend on your age, risk factors and state or territory, so confirm with your GP, pharmacist or immunisation provider. Some travel and workplace vaccines carry a private cost.

08 Common Questions
Frequently asked

What patients ask about vaccines.

Are NIP vaccines really free?

Yes, vaccines on the National Immunisation Program are free for eligible people, typically anyone with a Medicare card. Some providers may charge a consultation fee, though many bulk bill for immunisation visits.

Can vaccines give me the disease they prevent?

No. Vaccines used in Australia do not contain live germs capable of causing the disease. Mild symptoms afterwards reflect your immune system learning, not infection.

Why do some vaccines need boosters?

Immunity naturally fades over time for some diseases, and germs evolve. Boosters re-teach your immune system and top up the memory cells that keep protection strong.

How do I get my immunisation history?

Your immunisation history statement is available through myGov, linked to Medicare, or the Express Plus Medicare app. It lists every vaccine recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register.

Is vaccination safe during pregnancy?

Yes. Influenza and whooping cough vaccines are recommended during every pregnancy. They protect you and pass protective antibodies to your baby before birth. Your antenatal team will guide the timing.

What if I missed some childhood vaccinations?

Catch-up schedules exist for every age. Your GP or immunisation provider can compare your records against the recommended schedule and plan the doses you need, at any point in life.

Are vaccine side effects monitored after approval?

Yes. AusVaxSafety actively checks in with Australians after vaccination, and adverse events are reported to the TGA. Monitoring never stops after a vaccine is approved.
